All right, I'll be the one to ask...

RE: Floor replacement

I got the laminate at a Habitat store, so that cut my cost to around 1/2 of what it would have cost me at Home Depot, my total cost was $200.00 and about 8 hours of my time, and most of that time was driving form storage to home to make the cuts and back.
$200, 8 hours, but how much did it weigh?

RE: Can I make this work?

Are you serious? You are actually trying to create energy from nothing?
That's like hooking a siphon to your car's gas tank and feeding it back into the tank, so that you never run out of fuel.
If you are really serious about this question, I suggest that you NEVER try any do-it-yourself electrical work.

RE: Loading before the trip

If you stop to fill up with fuel along the way, you probably should turn it off, then pull out somewhere safe and turn it back on.
What a great safety tip. I never thought about a lit pilot light in a fuel station not being the smartest idea.
Sure, you better push your vehicle away from the filling station before starting it, too. Your internal combustion engine generates electrical sparks.

RE: water pump

Are you sure that you don't have a valve (on the inlet side of the pump) closed?
Also, I remember scratching my head for about 5 minutes one spring when I left the valve open that allows me to add anti-freeze.
The pump could just be sucking air through your winterizing tube, if you have one.

RE: NEW 5er How are my weights?

The poster did include srw in his post. With limited information from the original poster about the truck I can tell you that it should still be ok.
23,000 GCWR means it is a 2005 or newer F350. All 05+ F350srw have payload of over 3,000 pounds. The GVWR varies on those trucks based one engine, cab configuration and 4x4 vs. 2wd. For example, a 4x4 crew cab, long bed diesel has an 11,500 GVWR. The truck weighs about 8,000 pounds on average (real scale weight, not published curb weight). This leaves 3,500 for payload. A 2wd regular cab, 5.4 gas f350 would have a GVWR around 10,000 pounds. This truck is easily 1,500 pounds lighter and still gives the truck a working payload of around 3,500 pounds.
I have weighed a few of these F350/250 SRW. My friend has a 2005 F350srw CC, 4x4, short bed diesel and it weighs 7,500 pounds with a full tank of fuel. His GVWR is 11,200 pounds (I believe). This leaves him 3,700 pounds for payload. This is awesome for a SRW. I wish a had a 2005 or newer. You can't overload a 2005 or newer F350 SRW GVWR with a properly loaded fiver if you don't exceed the GCWR (unless you pack 1,000 pounds of cargo in the truck).
In other words, these 2005+ F350srw are the only srw pickups that will actually tow their GCWR or published tow rating without overloading the trucks GVWR. Finally, a srw that will tow 15,000 pounds without exceeding GVWR and you have the same payload no matter what options you order! They just give you a higher GVWR if you load the truck up with all the goodies.
^^^^^ What he said ^^^^^
Very good answer to the question.

RE: Loading before the trip

We typically go out every weekend, we turn the refrigerator on Wednesday morning or evening on our way to or home from work. Thursday night we load it up and Friday morning my husband takes it to work and we leave from the after work. When we get home we unload it and turn it off, but we make sure to leave the doors open to insure the inside doesn't mildew.
You may want to consider just leaving it on all the time. It has to work pretty hard every Wednesday. Keeping i cold, Sunday-Wednesday, wouldn't be nearly as hard on it.

RE: Cool Mods

Yuppers, just set on the ground and use your signal finder and a compass and you are good to go.
Found the plans here
Found the plans here and an explanation of how it works like this.
In that link, the 4" vertical piece needs to be a lot longer, the farther north you want to go.
Up here in the State of Washington, you need an elevation of 31 degrees. With this inverted setup, that would actually be 59 degrees.
In Dallas, the angle is about 51 degrees, or 39 degrees because it's inverted. That difference of 20 degrees will require a much taller stand.
(The reason that I call it an 'inverted' setup is that your D*TV box will tell you an elevation 'above the horizon'. But, with this stand, you start with the dish pointing straight up and need to angle it downward, so 90 minus whatever D*TV says. This is explained in the link, also.)

RE: Wireless 12V Switch

$12.99
Clickable link.
While it doesn't have enough amperage for an inverter, it still might be a neat gadget for remotely switching an outside light on and off.
You could keep one remote in the RV and another in the TV or toad for when you come back to camp after dark.
It couldn't provide the power directly to the inverter, but it has plenty of power to trigger a relay to do the job.

RE: Wireless 12V Switch

Looks interesting. It will have a small power draw, also, but it should be much less than your inverter and booster.

RE: Generator home backup question

Doesn't anyone read my posts? For the third time I'll repeat how my furnace is set up for the generator.
There is no way my setup will back-feed. My furnace is set up with a 12-3 cord that plugs into a single heavy duty receptacle. I unplug the furnace and then plug into the cord coming from the generator.
No, they don't. You can repeat this information hundreds of times and there will still be posts about how you will back-feed the power grid.
You should consider this thread dead.

RE: Running home furnace with generator

The problem with a transfer switch to feed the whole house is that everything will come back on and quickly overload that Honda.
The simplest and 'just as safe as any other solution' is what has been suggested by a few already. Put the outlet on the outside of the furnace, add a male plug to the furnace. Unplug the furnace and use an extension cord to your Honda when the power is out. This costs what? $10-$15?

RE: Running 12v in the winter in a semi-permanent spot question?

A while back I asked on here if you could use two pairs of thin wires instead of two fat ones for pos and neg, to get the gauge right, and was told no you can't.
As long as the current can be carried by just one wire adding the second in parallel is fine.
Paralleling two wires to add capacity is generally a no no.
Yeah, it essentially be comes a stranded cable. How thin were the pair of wires that you were going to use?

RE: champion vs. Honda generator...THE FACTS

Thanks for the suggestions on these 'cheaper' alternatives to the Honda...
Oh, and LeeT... you could rip everything out of the inside of your trailer, nothing but a shell... perhaps you could loose that ton you want to be rid of.
Maybe we could solve the power problem if someone could tell me where I can find a 12" square solar panel that will pull 3KW from ambient moonlight during full cloud cover. Oh, and I don't want to pay more than $500 for such a power source.

RE: Can you suggest a fifth wheel

Why is a TT out of the question? You should be able find something in a TT that has a fairly tall bedroom.
Otherwise, you(he) should look for a rear bedroom model:
